The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday announced India’s squad for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, which is scheduled to be held in South Africa. The tournament will start on February 10 and will end on 26 February 2023.
Meanwhile, the committee also declared the squad for the tri-series. Ahead of the world cup, team India will play a tri-series against South Africa and West Indies for better preparation.
Fast bowling all-rounder Shikha Pandey makes a sensational return to the 15-man squad led by Hermanpreet Kaur. Shika, 33, was surprisingly left out of the squad ahead of the 2022 Women’s ODI World Championships. She last appeared in T20 in Australia in October 2021.
Shikha is the second-highest wicket-taker in the Indian team in WT20Is(40) behind Jhulan Goswami. Shikha replaces seamer Meghna Singh, who was demoted to the reserves after a slump with Australia.
The team had no other highlights, mostly self-selection, but BCCI said the addition of all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar relied on fitness. Vastrakar recently missed the home series against Australia. Left-arm seamer Anjali Sarvani, who made an impressive debut in the recently concluded series, will also be competing in her first T20 World Cup.
Radha Yadav, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, and Devika Vaidya are fixtured as India’s spin bowling options, while off-spinner Sneh Rana has been listed in the reserves.
Coming to the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, India will start their campaign for the eighth edition of the tournament on February 12 against arch-rivals Pakistan women in Cape town.
Later, team India will face England, Ireland, and West Indies in-group B matches.
