India have suffered another setback in the ongoing T20I series against South Africa as vice-captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the last two matches due to a toe injury, sources close to the team told PTI. The injury was sustained during a training session, following which the team management decided not to take any risk with the star batter. As a precautionary measure, Gill has been withdrawn from the remaining games to ensure a smooth and speedy recovery. In his absence, Sanju Samson is expected to open the innings for India.

Gill’s latest injury comes at an unfortunate time, especially as he has been struggling for form in the shortest format. More concerning for the Indian camp is the fact that this marks his second serious injury in a short span. The Indian Test and ODI captain had earlier suffered a significant neck injury during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata in mid-November, which ruled him out of the remainder of the match, the second Test, and the ODI series. He was taken off the field immediately at that time and admitted to Woodlands Hospital, where he remained under observation.

According to BCCI sources, Gill’s earlier neck issue required extensive rest and careful rehabilitation, prompting the team management to avoid rushing his return. He underwent treatment, including an injection to ease symptoms, followed by a structured recovery program at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Only after being medically cleared did Gill make his comeback in the five-match T20I series against South Africa, stating that he felt fully fit after completing his rehabilitation.

With this fresh injury setback, the Indian team management is once again focused on managing Gill’s workload and fitness, especially with major international commitments ahead. The priority now remains his full recovery, as India look to balance immediate series requirements with long-term planning.
